Terrestrial Nanotoxicology: Evaluating the Nano-Biointeractions in Vascular Plants

چکیده
Abstract The effects of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) in living organisms are described in a myriad of articles. Most of the literature on this topic is devoted to plants of different gender and species. Studies from laboratories and greenhouse facilities highlight effects on chlorophyll production, plant growth, stress enzyme activities, phytotoxicity, cytotoxicity, and genotoxicity. With few exceptions, research reports show that toxic effects of ENPs on plants are associated with particle size, phase, surface properties, exposure concentration, and soil chemistry. ENPs have been found to be taken through roots from soilless/soil media and translocated to the aboveground organs. However, the uptake and translocation can occur in reverse if important amounts of ENPs are exposed to the foliage. This chapter includes an analysis of the most recent and relevant information about the interaction of ENPs with vascular plants. Most of the reviewed literature refers to highly produced and used ENPs. Data about exposure to carbon nanotubes (CNTs), cerium dioxide (nano-CeO2), titanium dioxide (nano-TiO2), zinc oxide (nano-ZnO), copper oxide (nano-CuO), gold (nano-Au), iron (nano-Fe3O4), silver (nano-Ag), and others ENPs are discussed.

An ISA-TAB-Nano based data collection framework to support data-driven modelling of nanotoxicology
Analysis of trends in nanotoxicology data and the development of data driven models for nanotoxicity is facilitated by the reporting of data using a standardised electronic format. ISA-TAB-Nano has been proposed as such a format. However, in order to build useful datasets according to this format, a variety of issues has to be addressed. These issues include questions regarding exactly which (m...
متن کاملSoil pH effects on the comparative toxicity of dissolved zinc, non-nano and nano ZnO to the earthworm Eisenia fetida.
To determine how soil properties influence nanoparticle (NP) fate, bioavailability and toxicity, this study compared the toxicity of nano zinc oxide (ZnO NPs), non-nano ZnO and ionic ZnCl2 to the earthworm Eisenia fetida in a natural soil at three pH levels. NP characterisation indicated that reaction with the soil media greatly controls ZnO properties. Three main conclusions were drawn. First ...
متن کاملCan the Ames test provide an insight into nano-object mutagenicity? Investigating the interaction between nano-objects and bacteria.
The aim of this study was to assess the interaction of a series of well characterised nano-objects with the Gram negative bacterium Salmonella typhimurium, and how such an interaction may relate to the potential mutagenicity of nano-objects. Transmission electron microscopy showed that nano-objects (Au-PMA-ATTO NPs, CeO₂ NPs, SWCNTs and MWCNTs), as well as CAFs entered S. typhimurium. Only DEPs...
متن کاملNano-Ag inhibiting action potential independent glutamatergic synaptic transmission but increasing excitability in rat CA1 pyramidal neurons.
The aim of this study was to investigate the actions of silver nanoparticles (nano-Ag) on glutamatergic synaptic transmission and excitability in hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons with whole cell patch technique. The amplitude of miniature excitatory postsynaptic currents (mEPSCs) was inhibited by silver nano-particles (nano-Ag) (10⁻⁵ g/ml and 10⁻⁴ g/ml), but the amplitude and frequency of spon...
متن کاملMajor Evolutionary Trends in Hydrogen Isotope Fractionation of Vascular Plant Leaf Waxes
Hydrogen isotopic ratios of terrestrial plant leaf waxes (δD) have been widely used for paleoclimate reconstructions. However, underlying controls for the observed large variations in leaf wax δD values in different terrestrial vascular plants are still poorly understood, hampering quantitative paleoclimate interpretation. Here we report plant leaf wax and source water δD values from 102 plant ...
